Growing up I was never exposed to African American women exercising and strength training. I had always heard that black women don’t work out due to their hair. After being exposed to several pages on social media, I learned that this was not true. As a black woman I was inspired by stories of weight loss, body and mind transformation and decided to change my mindset. This is a wonderful book for someone who is beginner or intermediate level. Even if you have been exercising for years this book is excellent for reference. The pictures are very engaging and colorful and will remind you to maintain proper form when completing exercises. Knowing your body type and developing a plan based on that information is very helpful, it’s something I had never considered in the past. I was able to use the guide to develop my action plan for the upcoming month so I can reach my fitness and nutrition goals. While the information may seem overwhelming for some, this is the type of book that you can read in chunks and refer to over and over. I will recommend this book to anyone who is looking to become Fit, Tight and Toned

    THANK YOU!!!
I’ve never read a book specifically for the fitness of women of color and my review starts with a big THANK YOU!
Finally we have a powerful woman of color to help inspire many of us in our fitness journey. I was able to read about my specific body type and understand how to begin at an acceptable pace. The illustrations, descriptions, and definitions are incredibly helpful and thank you for including them. I’ve never been consistent with weight training but this seems like something I can work with.

I’m currently undergoing cardiac rehabilitation and I’m attempting to incorporate what I’ve learned from this book into my regimen with the added assistance of my physical therapist.

“Fit, Tight, and Toned : A Black Woman’s Fitness Road Map to Sculpting Fit, Tight, and Toned Curves ” written by IFBB Pro and Fitness Expert, Laticia “Action” Jackson , is one of the best fitness guides I’ve ever read. This is more than just another book with workout routines and food guides; she speaks informatively and with the encouraging tone of a best girlfriend who cares about your emotional and physical health. She promotes a “no excuses” attitude , dispels on fitness myths that often intimidate women from working out such as “weights make women look like men”, ” spot reduction is possible “, and most importantly “Black women don’t/shouldn’t work out “, when in fact, we do and should ! Laticia is very emphatic in terms of realistic, long- term fitness goals that are unique to our individual bodies, and nutritional needs so we don’t become discouraged or disappointed throughout the journey. She also stresses that fitness should be activities we enjoy, so we look forward to the next workout and physically pushing ourselves further and better than what we imagined!

Fitness is not a gimmick or trend, but indeed a lifestyle that requires commitment and dedication. You only get one body and one health. Laticia’s thorough explanations and motivational words will inspire a beginner in fitness and help prolong those who are already involved! This book is definitely a must read and a keeper!

It is an easy read. It flows well. Great explanation of concepts. Enjoyed the encouragement along the way. It is well-formatted and organized. Thoroughly goes through fitness terms describing the different types of workout styles well. Great vocabulary section on fitness/ gym terminology and etiquette at the gym. I like the types for diversifying the cardio workouts. I was glad to see the importance of stretching expressed. Neat section sharing exercises in detail on how to perform them and the muscle groups used. It shares the muscle targeted and modifications. I like that it is broken down by fitness level. There are great photos. I like the Fit Jewels and the positive closing. The tracker was a great addition as well. As a fitness person myself I thought it was well written. Know you are getting evidence-based gems here.

I’ve recently completed Fit, Tight, and Toned and got an amazing understanding of my body type and different exercises to help improve both my physical fitness and appearance. Laticia has a no nonsense approach to fitness which has helped her achieve countless goals. As a woman of color, we don’t have many role models in the fitness industry and Laticia has come through with style, grace, and a commitment to encouraging us to live our best selves.

I do look forward to reading more of her books and (hint, hint) hopefully a cookbook in the future.

I am so thankful for Laticia “Action” Jackson who has shared her story and really set a stage of inspiration, and education. In the past I have found that there are often too many choices to make when it comes to getting in shape, like how to go about it, how to stay motivated and it can be really overwhelming. This book offers many of the tools you need to begin your journey to well being (nutrition guidelines to actual workouts), while also establishing what it means to truly love yourself enough to invest in a healthier lifestyle. I felt a great connection to her story, and to see someone grow from the obstacles and challenges she was faced with is absolutely inspiring!

Fitness At Its Finest–excellent ROI if you’re dedicated!

I recently finished reading Fit, Tight and Toned: A Black Woman’s Fitness Road Map To Tight, Toned and Firmed Curves by Laticia Action Jackson. It is a book for fitness-minded individuals looking for detailed information to create an inspired plan of action to meet their goals.

The book meets its mission of helping individuals make an informed decision about how to approach designing and implementing a strategy for a healthier lifestyle. A personal trainer at Laticia’s level can easily cost $200 or more an hour, and consultations are usually at least half that. On the lower end, a trainer may cost you $40 an hour (remember, you get what you pay for). While this book does not replace personal training, I mention those costs to highlight the value of Fit, Tight, and Toned. Even those amounts are nothing compared to the thousands of dollars one may spend on medical bills if they don’t prioritize their health.

Readers of this book will benefit from Laticia’s years of experience, education, and training. Overall, this book can be seen as an act of service because it helps to address issues that have made many women hesitate to take the next step to improve their quality of life, and there is no woman out there who doesn’t deserve to reach optimal health.
I appreciate the fact that this book doesn’t dilly-dally. It gets to the point so that the reader can get to work. For those like me with hectic days, shorter reads are often better. The descriptions, guides, and images of critical exercises are helpful and organized by target areas, making it easy to flip back to what you need (or scroll if you have gone digital).
The tips are practical, and the information provided is research-based. The book also teaches the language from the fitness field so readers can develop greater comfort in environments that may be new to them. Alternatively, there are options for those who will still embark on the journey at home.

This book is perfect for people considering weight training, new to it, or out of practice and needing a refresher. For those with higher expertise in the content, it could be an excellent addition to anyone’s professional reference library. It is also a plus that there are ongoing opportunities for support through related social media communities.

    FIT, TIGHT, AND TONED

The book “Fit, Tight, and Toned” has played a role in motivating me. Initially, I believed that certain aspects of fitness were not suitable for me due to my age and gender. However, this book enlightened me about the importance of tailoring exercises to my unique body type. This insight became my driving force to excel in weightlifting and prevent injuries. Authored by Laticia “Action Jackson,” the book has been instrumental in refining my lifting techniques. It provides explanations and practical demonstrations of correct exercise forms. I can no longer make excuses for ineffective workouts. I am now on the path to self-improvement through proper lifting techniques and self-empowerment.”

    Perfect For Planning Workouts
I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on workout plans from IG trainers. This book helped me identify and understand my body type. It takes away the guesswork for those of us that aren’t really sure what to do. After reading this you’ll be able to make a plan and have the knowledge to make adjustments when needed. It includes color pictures and tips for the exercises as well. If you have Changing the Norm, this is included in the back (no color pictures). If you need more help addressing the whole person and not just fitness, I recommend picking up Changing The Norm. I look forward to reading more books from this author.

I highly recommend Fit, Tight, and Toned by Laticia! Here’s why: Fit, Tight & Toned is more than just another workout book — it’s a complete roadmap for building strength, confidence, and balance. The author, a Fitness Olympian and M.P.H., delivers expert guidance in a voice that’s relatable and motivating.
I love how the book combines evidence-based fitness advice with mindset coaching. It walks you through every step — from understanding your body type and setting realistic goals, to mastering form and tracking progress. The visuals and layout are polished and professional, and the motivational quotes keep you inspired along the way.
This is an empowering, well-structured book that truly delivers on its promise. Perfect for women who want to sculpt their curves, learn proper technique, and feel their strongest — inside and out.

I had the pleasure of reading “Fit, Tight and Toned”. It is nice to read a book by an African woman, for African American women wanting to get fit. I have read various books, seen videos, blogs, etc. on lifting, but never one geared towards me. Through this book, I’ve learned the proper way to workout for my body type, the specific reps I should be doing, and how often I should be doing them. This book is excellent for novices, but also for those who are intermediate and need to make sure their techniques are correct. This book contains a plethora of info. You will not be disappointed.
    Thank you Laticia “Action” Jackson!
